I completed a DPhil in 2010 on Molecular Virology and Molecular Epidemiology of viral infectious agents. Currently, I am an Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Virology, Head and Scientific Director of the of the National AIDS Reference Center of Southern Greece (https://eelno.uniwa.gr/monada-ergastiriakis-epitirisis-hiv-aids-loimoxis-kai-iogenon-ipatitidon/) and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, both at the University of West Attica.
Previously, I have spent 5 years as Senior Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer (2013-2018) at the Institute of Infection and Global Health at the University of Liverpool conducting research, both lab based and in silico, and provided guidance, tutorship and support to junior researchers, undergraduate/postgraduate students and staff. I am interested in infectious diseases with a particular interest in viral infections, and the use of advanced molecular and epidemiological tools for diagnosing, monitoring and tracking viruses and their relevant epidemics.
In my research interests are included molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases with particular interest in viral infections, viruses’ evolution and how is driven by genetic variability of the host, as well as evolution of emerging epidemics and the emergence of evolution caused by antimicrobials. At the moment, in my research group in Athens, we study the genetic diversity, evolutionary patterns as well as dispersal of viral epidemics of different viruses including the new SARS-CoV-2.
Previously conducted research has been published in leading journals, such as Lancet, JAMA, Lancet Global Health, BMC Medicine, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Addiction among others with more than 3,900 citations and h-index 27.
