Alkiviadis C. Vatopoulos received his Medical (qualifying) Degree as well as his Doctoral Degree from the University of Athens, Medical School. He pursued postgraduate training (British council fellowship) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (MSc course in Medical Microbiology)  He is  a State Accredified Specialist in Medical Microbiology (Athens).  He is currently Professor in Public Health Microbiology at the Department of Public Health Policy, School of Public Health,  University of West Attica.

His main scientific interests include public health microbiology, bacteria typing, hospital acquired Infections, and Bacterial antibiotic resistance. He has established and coordinates the Hellenic System for the Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance (www.mednet.gr/whonet). He has published more than 120 papers in international peer reviewed journals on antibiotic resistance, molecular mechanisms, and epidemiology. For the last years he is also involved in the One Health approach strategy of European Union for combating Antibiotic Resistance
