Professor of Health Education & Health Promotion-Public Health


Kyriakoula Merakou is professor of Health Education & Health Promotion-Public Health at the Department of Public Health Policy, School of Public Health of the University of West Attica. She holds a degree in social and political sciences from Panteion University, a Master Degree of the National School of Public Health and a doctorate from the School of Medicine of the University of Athens. Since then, her further training is in pedagogy, health education and health promotion and mental health.

She has 67 publications in Greek and international journals with h-index: 17 and i10-index: 20 and is a reviewer in international journals on corresponding topics. She has participated in the writing, co-writing and editing of 30 books and other health education materials. She has also participated with more than 100 presentations-announcements in conferences in the field of public health.

Since 2000 she has been teaching the Health Education and Health Promotion course in Public Health Postgraduate Program at the former National School of Public Health and since 2019 at the Department of Public Health Policy of the University of West Attica. In addition, for a number of years she taught the corresponding course at the postgraduate level at the University of Athens and at the Athens University of Technological Sciences. She has participated in the organization and teaching of a large number of seminars for school teachers and health professionals.

She has been project manager and coordinator of a number of Greek and European research and educational programs in health education and health promotion.

Her academic and research interests focus on health education methodology, health promotion methodology, planning of education and health promotion interventions, health promotion at school, health promotion in the elderly, quality of life, positive health and well-being.
